Five years ago, I quit my job and set off on a crazy adventure to start a new non-profit that would serve two communities I felt incredibly passionate about: Omaha’s artists and the neighborhoods of north Omaha. I was a journalist by training, having only a few years experience working in the arts and even less dealing with the non-profit sector… and for every person who thought my concept for The Union was solid, three others told me I was making the *hugest* mistake + surely destined for failure.

To be completely honest, there was more than one occasion during those first couple of years when I thought those folks may have been right… it was overwhelming work, forcing me out of my comfort zone again + again. So many sleepless nights spent stressing about grants, resources and program development. Freaking out about how I could possibly make a difference when I was the only one on staff + could barely wrap my brain around a P+L statement.

Fast forward five years… The Union is now a family -- staff, board and community – sharing in that dream to use the arts as a vehicle for social justice. With YOUR support The Union has not only grown – it has THRIVED. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t feel completely honored and humbled to be able to do this work – to watch this dream of mine come true.

Thank you – so very much – for all of the support + love you’ve shown The Union over these first five years! Huge thanks to Watie White + Mary Zicafoose – the first two people I shared my vision with – the first two who didn’t just tell me it was possible, but personally invested their time and energy into making it a reality. And, try as I might, there is no possible way for me to express my gratitude to the Weitz Family Foundation for believing in me and taking a massive leap of faith by providing me with that first grant – without their continued support nothing we’ve accomplished over the past five years would have been possible.

OoOoOh friends – let me tell you – THE BEST IS YET TO COME! 2016 is going to be an incredible year for The Union and our creative community… New Programs! New Team Members! A NEW BUILDING!!! Thank you for helping to make my dreams come true -- I am so looking forward to continuing this amazing journey with you by my side.

Wishing you + yours a brilliant new year and I hope to see you at The Union soon!
With heartfelt love + gratitude,
Brigitte
