We're doing something a little different for our next two Friday Family Nights with a workshop we're calling Slice of Life, inspired by the book The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.
We're inviting youth and families to reflect on their own unique family identity and culture similar to the book’s short, but evocative, vignettes (slices of life). Participants will create their own illustrated stories reflecting their personal experiences, integrating reading, writing, and visual literacy in the process.
The project will culminate in a community presentation event on Friday, October 23rd, where students will share their work, fostering confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of the power of storytelling to build community and inspire change.
Participation in this event is FREE.

WORKSHOP SUMMARY: Youth and families will tell the story of their family, or their culture through three to four short vignettes, which can be poems, short monologues, prose, or brief scenes.
This event is made possible through the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read. This initiative is aiming to broaden our understanding of ourselves and our neighbors through the power of a shared reading experience.
