Artist Bio

Thomas Curry is a self taught documentary photographer who graduated from Omaha North High School and attended University Of Nebraska Lincoln and Metro Community College. With a unique perspective shaped by his experiences in Omaha's diverse cultural environments, Thomas's photography reflects his authentic self and his passion for capturing the unforeseen and uncovered moments of today's world. As a "fly on the wall" photographer, Thomas blends into the background, allowing his subjects to reveal themselves naturally. His lens captures not only the stories of everyday people, but also the beauty of nature and the architectural landscape that surrounds us. The French artistry and architecture from his past history classes fueled his creative photography process. Thomas has showcased his work at the Culxr House, Fabric Lab, and the Malcolm X Center, and his images have been featured in various publications and projects, including books, brochures, business cards, mural art, and newspapers.

Artist Statement

Currently I am driven to capture the essence of everyday life in Omaha, showcasing the city's vibrant culture, community, and resilience. I'm drawn to the beauty in the ordinary and the moments that often go unnoticed. Through my lens, I aim to challenge perceptions and highlight the beauty in the ordinary. Omaha's identity is complex, often misunderstood, and frequently questioned. Yet, beneath the surface lies a rich tapestry of experiences, traditions, and stories. My work explores the urban landscape, from nostalgic parades to community gatherings, Omaha Pride, and Native events. This work is about all of Omaha that is urban, everywhere where the concrete connects. By documenting these moments, I preserve the history and cultural heritage of communities. Influenced by the narrative power of history books and National Geographic's dynamic storytelling, I strive to create visually striking images that evoke emotions and spark creativity. My photographs tell the stories of everyday people, their experiences, struggles, and triumphs. With a keen eye for composition, I often employ the rule of thirds to create visually striking images that draw the viewer in inviting them to connect with the city and its people. Ultimately, my work celebrates Omaha's unique spirit, complexity, and beauty, leaving a lasting visual legacy that reflects the heart of the community.
