Kimmie (Peer Mentor)

Meet Kimmie

Everybody calls me Kimmie (or Kim) and I’m a returning peer mentor at The Union for Contemporary Art. I've always enjoyed working with kids, and I have always shared art with the people around me. This may have led me to where I am now! I have done volunteer work with kids, I’ve been doing art at Kent Bellows Mentoring program for some time now, I painted the Benson Food Forest mural, I’ve shown at a few galleries, and done art on shoes since I was 13. I did the Skatefest art on a skateboard and I was one of only ten people chosen! I have done this program once before, and loved it. I am 17 now, and I’ve decided that years of babysitting have taught me to have empathy and to be honest with kids. I love finding random beautiful moments and people and being able to manipulate or imagine something into my work. My imagination does not stop exploring, so I've found that new mediums are perfect when I hit an artist block. I love a good color pallet from green/brown all the way to neons. The only true theme in all my work I’d say is expression. This can be what I’m feeling or what I empathize with from looking in. I love inclusivity and I try to represent as many souls as I can, and amplify important voices. In conclusion, since there is no limit to feelings or intuition, there are no limits to expression of said feelings, which is where I find my creative flow. I see art as the key to my peace. A key to starting hard conversations and a way to connect with people. Being able to execute other people's vision can really be a blessing. During my time at The Union, I really hope to amplify and empower these kids’ voices. It is one of my priorities to make sure they feel safe and that I’m ready to help as much as possible! I’m also always doing art, so keep your eyes peeled for my name Omaha!

Where is your favorite place in the world? Why?

England. I lived there for 8 1/2 years total and I truly miss it there. Although the grass is always greener, I think that’s where I call home, if anywhere.

If you could be any animal, what would it be? Why?

A flying squirrel. Those things are awesome!

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I’ve had a very hard mental health journey, and to cope I apply to random things (such as galleries, shows, events etc)

If you were a crayon, what color would you be? Why?

I’d find a way to be neon. I’m just bold I think, and they are pretty!
